St . Patrick’ s Day-Inspired Recipes to Make us Wish this Came More than Once a Year.
- 1-1/2 pounds lamb stew meat, cut into one-inch cubes
- 1/3 cup plus 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour, divided
- 3 tablespoons olive oil, divided
- 3 medium onions, chopped
- 3 garlic cloves, minced
- 4 cups reduced-sodium beef broth, plus a splash for deglazing the pan
- 2 medium potatoes, peeled and cubed
- 4 medium carrots, cut into one-inch pieces
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon dried thyme
- 1/2 teaspoon pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 cup frozen peas
- 2 tablespoons water
Step 1: Prep and Brown the Lamb
Preheat your slow cooker on low and heat a cast-iron skillet (or any other heavy pan) on medium-high.
Toss the lamb with a third cup of flour until coated. You can do this by sealing the two ingredients in a zip-top bag, then shaking, or by tossing them together in a large mixing bowl.
Once the skillet is hot, brown the lamb with 2 tablespoons of olive oil. You don’t need to cook the lamb long—just enough to get some nice color on the outside. When it’s nicely browned, remove from the pan with a slotted spoon and set aside.
In the same pan, saute the onions and garlic for a minute or two. Hit this with a splash or two of the beef broth—this will help deglaze, or loosen all the tasty browned bits from the pan. Again, you don’t need to cook these completely—the slow cooker will take care of that.
Test Kitchen tip: Even though this recipe relies on your trusty slow cooker to get that fork-tender texture, browning gives ingredients a big flavor boost.
Step 2: Start Slow Cooking
When the slow cooker is warmed, add the lamb and the onion, garlic and broth mixture—you want every bit of flavor from the skillet going into the slow cooker. Then stir in the potatoes, carrots, seasonings, Worcestershire sauce and beef broth.
Let the stew cook on low for 8 to 10 hours.
Step 3: Add the Finishing Touches
Peas cook quickly in the slow cooker, so wait until the last half hour to stir them in.
This is also the time to give your stew a bit more body. So, thicken the stew with a bit of flour. Whisk together 1 tablespoon of flour with 2 tablespoons of water until nice and smooth. Then stir into the stew. Place the lid back on the slow cooker and let the stew bubble away for 30 minutes more.

Most Expensive Coffee
Kopi Luwak is by far the most expensive coffee in the world. Retail pricing can be found in the range of $450 per pound, or 10 bucks per brewed cup.
Kopi Luwak is very different from cheap, gourmet coffee most drink every day. Each hand-harvested bean of Kopi Luwak has been digested and pooped out of the system of a small Indonesian cat.
When you try a cup of Kopi Luwak it is fun to figure out whether having cat digestive properties on your coffee beans improve the flavor, or whether this was all just an elaborate prank of these Indonesian farmers. Kopi Luwak Coffee 16 oz – Free Range Kopi Luwak
The Kopi Luwak Coffee aroma is rich and strong, and the coffee is incredibly full bodied, almost syrupy. It’s thick with a hint of chocolate, and lingers on the tongue with a long, clean aftertaste. What is Kopi Luwak Coffee?
Kopi Luwak Coffee has a very unusual origin unlike any other coffee bean. The Luwak denizen (a member of the cat family also known as the Asian Palm Civet) of the coffee plantations of Java, Sumatra, and Sulawesi, eats only the ripest coffee cherries. Unable to digest the coffee beans, the Luwak graciously deposits them on the jungle floor where they are eagerly collected by the locals. The stomach acids and enzymatic action involved in this unique fermentation process produces the beans for the world rarest coffee beverage. The secret of this delicious blend, enthuses the Indonesia Tourism Promotion.

- The Most Expensive Coffee in the World famously known from the movie The Bucket List
The most delicious (and one of the most expensive) coffees in the world does not hail from Jamaica or Hawaii, but instead, from Indonesia. Kopi Luwak (Civet) Coffee is extremely rare. It is harvested from the droppings of a cat-like animal (The Luwak). The Luwak’s are very selective eaters.
They love to eat raw coffee cherries and will only eat the best (ripest) of the bunch. Their digestive system processes the cherries, removing the outer husk and leaves the green coffee beans intact in their droppings. The droppings are dried, the beans are then removed and thoroughly cleaned and ready to be roasted. The internal digestion process adds a very unique and special flavor to the beans, removing the bitterness. Whether you are looking for a unique gift for someone special, or, you are a coffee connoisseur and want to treat yourself to a once-in-a-lifetime experience, Kopi Luwak coffee is the ticket!
Our Kopi Luwak beans are imported directly from a Luwak farm in Indonesia and are hand roasted by our master coffee roaster in micro batches. We supply very small amounts of roasted and packaged beans to Amazon so, rest assured, the beans are always fresh and you will not be disappointed! Brewing Recommendations: French Press: Coarsely Grind 28 grams of Kopi Luwak Coffee Beans. Place ground beans in empty French Press. Bring 16 ounces of water to a boil. Allow to cool to 195-200 degrees Fahrenheit (10-15 seconds). Add just boiled water to French press and stir.
Place Lid on French Press with plunger extended in a manner that will not allow steam to escape. Let sit for 5 minutes. Slowly push plunger down to the bottom of the French press (20 seconds or so from top to bottom). Pour Coffee and Enjoy! P.S. Do not allow coffee to sit inside the French Press as it will continue to brew.
My thoughts about a $10 cup of coffee.
It was absolutely delicious. A different and distinctive flavor. Such a rich aroma, but a mellow and thin body. It had a nutty, and sort of hazlenut tone. No aftertaste, really quite interesting. If it weren’t for the scarcity and experience value – I’m not sure it’s worth the high price. However, wait until you taste it…. WOW.
That familiar coffee bitterness is wrapped up in a mild chocolate flavor. If most mild coffees have the taste profile of milk chocolate, Kopi Luwak tastes like a high quality dark chocolate, sweet with a hint of bitterness at the same time.
It goes down very smoothly, and every sip is a delight. It is smooth, mild and sweet, with a gentle hint of bitterness.
Tried it with a bit of cream and sugar. Not recommended that spoiled it completely, masking the flavors and turning it into just another mild coffee.
I can now say that is check off my bucket list with Kopi Luwak.
Today on athomecook.com I bring to you the famous Oreo cookie ball recipe. Grab two packs of Oreo cookies and a double pack of Philadelphia cream cheese. Get your food processor and put all of the Oreo cookies into the food processor and blend or chop until a fine dust. Take out about .25 cups for crumble toping and set aside. Add one pack of the cream cheese in chunks and blend until a dough like consistency. Roll into Oreo cookie ball a bit smaller than a golf ball and put into the freezer for hardening. If your processor is small run in two batches, one pack of Oreos and one pack of cream cheese. In a double Broiler put in your chocolate that melts easily usually found the in cake section of store, I like the almond bark and it works great. Roll each of the semi frozen balls in the melted chocolate and set aside to cool. Drizzle with an opposite color chocolate or sprinkle with some of the Oreo cookie ball Dust saved from before.
Enjoy you and your guests will have great fun talking about these truffle like Oreo balls.
I have made these for several years and they are always a HUGE hit! They are now a tradition at our family Christmas party. For variation use white chocolate as well as the semi-sweet and both are delicious! They taste wonderful and are always a hit!

Quality and Value
If you are looking at quality and value, look no further! I can’t say enough how much I enjoy this new mixer. Bosch mixers are the superlative mixer for your kitchen.
We had the other brand mixer for many years and after countless whole wheat loaves and cookies, it died. I really wasn’t sure when I was doing my research, as so many just love the Kitchen Aid, however as I age the Kitchen Aid is just too heavy for me.
We replaced it with this new Bosch model and I have to say I’m impressed. Though more streamlined with a smaller footprint, none of the Bosch quality has not been compromised. I wanted a compact unit that was easy to change, remove bowls and just use.
I love this machine. It is considerably quieter than my previous blender, but the power is amazing. I can mix up a large batch of dough in less time than before, and the dough comes out perfect. You might find that you need to modify your recipes slightly in terms of kneading or mixing time, because the machine is more efficient than the competition. The dough hook and the mixing paddles that come with it do a great job with thinner batters. Highly recommended.
The Bosch Universal reputation of quality began in 1952. Known for performance and exceptional reliability, Bosch takes food preparation to a whole new level. The Bosch kitchen mixer is uniquely designed with its motor below the bowl and out of the way, making it more compact, lightweight, weighing less than half what its competitors do, and easier for you to add ingredients and see inside the bowl as you’re mixing.
Dual wire whips spin independently as they rotate around the bowl, creating triple whipping action and allowing you to whip as little as one egg white into over a cup of meringue. Wire whips are designed to aerate light or pourable mixtures and batters, mash cooked potatoes, or shred hot, cooked meats in seconds.
Heavy-duty dough hook
The heavy-duty dough hook is designed to mimic the motions of hand kneading to stretch, tuck, and fold the dough for maximum gluten development, kneading 100% of the dough every 4 rotations around the bowl. Knead as little as one loaf of bread (3 cups flour) or up to 14 1-pound loaves, with either white or whole grain flour. The powerful belt-driven transmission delivers adequate torque to knead light or heavy loads without overheating or bogging down. The dough hook can also mix up to 34 dozen cookies in a single batch.
Four suction feet on the base grip the mixer to your counter and provide optimum stability. Choose from 4 speeds with pulse. Convenient cord storage. 6.5-quart bowl locks in place and has a removable drive shaft for easy cleaning. Bowl, lid, pouring shield, and wire whips are dishwasher safe; dough hook is hand-wash only. Many optional accessories and attachments are available to purchase separately for increased functionality, such as a blender, meat grinder, citrus juicer, cookie paddles, cake paddles, bowl scraper attachment, food processor, slicer/shredder, pasta maker, and more.
Snake River Farms for the best American Wagyu Beef
The real Japanese Kobe beef comes from a specific area of Japan. There are only about 3000 head of Wagyu cattle that qualify as Kobe, so this unique distinction will cost you. Probably spending over $250 for a small steak if you can even find it at in the US.
Available in the US is a different variety “American Kobe” or “American Wagyu” beef. This beef usually a cross of a Japanese Wagyu breed and an Angus. You get some of the super marbling and flavor of the Wagyu breed and the fast-growing high yield of the Angus. Shop all Snake River Farms Products.
Cross Breeding the Wagyu with the Angus
The benefit of cross breeding the Wagyu with the Angus is a super high quality of beef more affordable to the than the Japanese Kobe. Of course an American Wagyu steak won’t be as good as a Japanese Kobe steak but it is close for a more reasonable price.
That is the whole Kobe/Wagyu thing in a nutshell anyway. Please note, I include affiliate links within this post to support the maintenance and development of this site.
There are more subtleties to the cuts and those articles will be here as I have time try each cut and then report on my finings.
Are there good Prime steaks and great Prime steaks? Of course, that is where the Japanese grading scale comes in. Nearly all American Wagyu steaks would grade out as Prime due to the fat content and marbling so by using the Japanese grading scale you can start go figure out just how good a cut of American Wagyu beef really is. Prime sets a bottom standard of what a steak needs to be but that leaves a lot of room at the top end of the scale for American Wagyu and Kobe beef.
The Japanese beef grading system
The Japanese beef grading system uses the BMS scale (Beef Marble Score) to determine the quality of the meat. They check the carcass between the 6th and 7th rib to determine the fat content of the meat and they also use some different calculations to determine the yield of the carcass. The BMS goes basically from 3-12 with 3-4 being average (a score of “3”), 5-7 being good (a score of “4”), and 8-12 being excellent (a score of “5”). The yield score is a letter grade A, B, or C depending on how much beef the carcass will yield. So the best score you can get on a Kobe steak is an A5. This is the best of the best. A3 and A4 are still very, very good but A5 or a high yield with a BMS score of over 8 is about the best you can get. 1
When you look at an American Wagyu steak or roast the first thing you will notice is how much more fat is marbled in the meat than a regular steak and this is where the exceptional flavor and texture come from. You really, really need to be careful to not overcook a Wagyu steak because if you do all the fat will render out of it and take away some of its charm.
One of the best ways to get your hands on some American Wagyu beef is to order online and Snake River Farms is one of the best places to get it. They offer several different cuts and the best price.
Snake River Farms Wagyu Beef
Snake River Farms Wagyu Beef has a grading of their American Wagyu beef: Black and Gold Grade. The regular American Wagyu beef has a BMS score of between 6 and 8 while the Gold Grade has a BMS score of 9+. The Gold Grade is the best of the best and while the prices might shock you at first you will notice the difference if you splurge and give it a shot. Below are some of the different cuts offered in the two different categories:
No matter which American Wagyu beef cut you go with, you will be impressed with the quality and you will see how it is a step above your regular beef. American Wagyu beef probably won’t be an everyday thing but for a special anniversary, birthday, or party you will be happy with your choice.
In this article you learned something about American Wagyu and Kobe beef and hopefully you will give it a try. I Highly Recommend snake river farms wagyu beef.
