Kurobuta pork: Your guide to premium flavor in 2026

Kurobuta pork: Your guide to premium flavor in 2026

Finding the perfect main course for a special occasion can be a challenge, especially when you want something that feels truly premium. While many people gravitate toward expensive steaks, there is another option that offers an equally unforgettable experience. We have found that Kurobuta pork consistently surprises even the most seasoned foodies with its depth of flavor and incredible texture.

If you have ever ordered a high-end steak, you likely know the difference between a standard grocery store cut and a prime, well-marbled ribeye. But when it comes to pork, most people are still stuck with the “other white meat” (which is often lean, dry, and lacking character). That is where Kurobuta pork changes everything. Often called the “Wagyu of pork,” this heritage breed offers a level of richness and tenderness that most home cooks did not know was possible. At At Home Cook, we believe that learning about your food is just as important as eating it, so let's break down why this specific breed is the gold standard for premium flavor.

What is Kurobuta pork?

In Japanese, the term Kurobuta literally translates to “black pig”. This name refers to the purebred Berkshire hog, a heritage breed prized for centuries. While standard commodity pork is bred for fast growth and lean yields, Berkshire hogs are raised for quality, flavor, and marbling.

The result is a meat that looks and tastes fundamentally different from what you find in a typical supermarket. It is darker in color (often a deep reddish pink) and contains significant intramuscular fat. This fat is the secret to its succulent texture. If you have ever felt that pork was a boring or dry protein, trying Kurobuta for the first time is a bit of a revelation. We see it as a luxury culinary item, much like a foodie might view a truffle or fine caviar. For more on premium proteins, check out our Kurobuta tag. The Berkshire heritage: A 300-year legacy

The story of Kurobuta Pork Guide does not actually start in Japan. It began in Berkshire County, England, over 300 years ago. According to historical accounts, the breed was founded by Oliver Cromwell’s army and quickly became a favorite of British royalty. Queen Victoria herself was known to have bred a boar named “Ace of Spades” in the American Berkshire registry.

In the late 19th century, British diplomats brought these pigs to Japan as a gift. The Japanese, who already had a deep appreciation for highly marbled meat such as Wagyu beef, recognized the breed's potential. They refined the genetics and farming practices, eventually establishing the “Kurobuta” standard that we know today.

It is important to understand the distinction between commodity pork and true heritage breeds. Commodity pork comes from pigs bred for industrial efficiency. They grow fast and lean, which makes them cheap but also limits their flavor potential. Heritage breeds like Berkshire grow roughly 10% more slowly, which allows the meat to develop greater complexity and better fat distribution. This is why you will often see the Rare Breeds Survival Trust working to protect these genetics.

Why Kurobuta is the “Wagyu of pork.”

The comparison to Wagyu beef is not just marketing fluff. There is actual science behind why The Complete Guide to Kurobuta Pork is superior. The most significant factor is the pH level of the meat. Berkshire hogs naturally have a higher pH than standard pigs.
We earn commissions if you shop through the links on this page at no additional cost.

Why does pH matter? A higher pH means the meat can retain more moisture during cooking. This is why Kurobuta is so much juicier than regular pork. This is also why the meat has a striking dark reddish-pink color, rather than the pale gray color of cooked commodity pork.

Kurobuta pork's higher pH levels ensure superior moisture retention, delivering a juicier, more flavorful experience compared to commodity pork.

Then there is the marbling. Intramuscular fat is what gives meat its flavor and “melt-in-your-mouth” quality. In Kurobuta pork, this fat is finely distributed throughout the muscle fibers. When you cook it, that fat melts and bastes the meat from the inside out. The sensory profile is often described as buttery, with a slight nutty sweetness and a depth of flavor that is more like steak than traditional pork. If you are a fan of Snake River Farms American Wagyu beef, you will find the same commitment to quality here.

Feature Kurobuta (Berkshire) Commodity Pork
Color Deep reddish-pink Pale pink to white
Marbling High (intramuscular) Low to none
pH Level Higher (better moisture) Lower (dries out)
Growth Rate Slower (better flavor) Fast (industrial)
Flavor Profile Buttery, sweet, rich Mild, neutral

Because the meat is so rich, you might want to approach certain cuts differently than you would with grocery store pork. You can find many of these in our Kurobuta Pork Collection.

Frenched pork chops

The Frenched pork chop is the classic choice for a premium dinner. “Frenching” refers to the process of removing the meat and fat from the bone, which results in a beautiful presentation. These are ideal for pan-searing and finishing in the oven. Because of the marbling, they are incredibly forgiving and stay moist even if you slightly overcook them.

Double bone chops

If you want the ultimate juicy experience, go for the Double Bone Pork Chop. These are extra-thick cuts that let you achieve a deep, dark crust on the outside while keeping the center perfectly tender. They are great for the grill or reverse searing.

Pork collar

This cut is gaining massive popularity among chefs. While most people reach for a pork shoulder (Boston butt) for roasting, the Pork Collar vs Pork Shoulder is actually superior for several reasons. It has a more consistent fat distribution and a more refined texture than the shoulder. It is perfect for a slow-roasted centerpiece or for slicing into steaks.

Specialty items

Do not overlook the smaller or more processed cuts. Kurobuta bacon and hams are significant improvements for breakfast or holiday meals. The same heritage fat that makes the chops so good also makes the bacon crisp up perfectly while remaining tender. We also recommend looking at pork shanks for braising or American Kobe Wagyu boneless prime rib if you want to branch out into other premium meats.

Cut Best Cooking Method Ideal For
Frenched Chop Pan-sear / Oven Dinner parties
Double Bone Chop Grill / Reverse sear Weekend BBQ
Pork Collar Slow roast / Braise Family gatherings
Spare Ribs Smoke / Slow cook Classic BBQ
Pork Shank Braise Comfort food

Essential tips for cooking Kurobuta pork

The biggest mistake you can make with Kurobuta pork is treating it like the dry, lean pork of the 1990s. Here is how to handle it properly to ensure you get the most out of your investment.

The 145°F rule

For decades, we were told to cook pork until it was white and dry to ensure safety. Today, the USDA recommends an internal temperature of 145°F for chops and roasts, followed by a three-minute rest. This leaves the meat slightly pink and incredibly juicy. With Kurobuta, this is critical. If you cook it to 160°F or higher, you are melting away the very fat that you paid a premium for. Cooking Pork Chops is Easy (Really!)

Technique: The reverse sear

For thick cuts like the Double Bone Chop, we recommend the reverse sear. This involves cooking the meat at a low temperature (either in the oven or on the indirect side of a grill) until it reaches about 130°F. Then, you move it to a hot pan or the grill's direct heat to get a quick sear on the outside. This ensures edge-to-edge tenderness and a perfect crust.

This diagram illustrates the reverse sear method, crucial for achieving edge-to-edge tenderness and a perfect crust on thick Kurobuta pork.

Seasoning philosophy

When the meat is this good, less is more. We recommend starting with just plenty of kosher salt and black pepper. You want the natural sweetness and buttery flavor of the Berkshire pork to be the star. If you want to add more complexity, consider Japanese-inspired pairings like miso, ginger, or yuzu kosho. Savory herbs like rosemary, sage, and thyme also complement the rich fat beautifully.

The Wagyu Shop landing page.

Pairing ideas

  • Glazed carrots: Sautéed in honey or brown sugar to match the pork's sweetness.
  • Roasted sweet potatoes: Provide a crisp exterior and a soft, sweet interior.
  • Steamed green beans: Add brightness and a “pop” of freshness to balance the richness.
  • Sautéed mushrooms: For an extra hit of umami.

Elevate your next meal with premium heritage pork

Bottom line? Kurobuta pork is not just “better pork.” It is a different experience entirely. Whether you are planning a special holiday meal or you just want to see what all the fuss is about, we highly recommend trying a heritage breed.

Frequently Asked Questions

What exactly makes Kurobuta pork different from the pork I buy at the grocery store?

Kurobuta pork comes from purebred Berkshire hogs, which are a heritage breed. Unlike standard commodity pigs, these hogs have a genetic predisposition to higher marbling, darker color, and higher pH, which makes the meat juicier and more flavorful.

Is Kurobuta pork too fatty for a healthy diet?

While Kurobuta is more marbled than standard lean pork, this fat is intramuscular (inside the muscle), which provides flavor and tenderness. It is a premium product intended for an elevated dining experience rather than a ‘low-fat' commodity.

Why is Kurobuta pork so much more expensive than regular pork?

The cost reflects the heritage genetics and the slower growth rate of the Berkshire hogs. These pigs take longer to mature and are often raised on small family farms with higher welfare standards and specialized diets, all of which contribute to the premium flavor.

Do I need special equipment to cook Kurobuta pork properly?

No, you do not need special equipment, but we highly recommend using a reliable meat thermometer. Because the meat is best enjoyed at a medium internal temperature (145°F), knowing the exact temperature is the best way to prevent overcooking.

Can I find Kurobuta pork at my local butcher?

It depends on your location, but most standard grocery stores do not carry it. You are more likely to find it at high-end specialty butchers or by ordering online from reputable sources like Snake River Farms or The Wagyu Shop.

What is the best way to prepare Kurobuta pork for a first timer?

We recommend starting with a simple bone-in pork chop. Season it generously with salt and pepper, pan-sear it in a cast-iron skillet with a little butter, and cook it until it reaches an internal temperature of 145°F. Let it rest for at least three minutes before serving.

Description

American Wagyu Kobe briskets are the “secret ingredient” for competitive barbecue.

Pioneering Quality Beef

Wagyu and high-quality cattle were first bred in the late 1980s, and they knew this was something special in its deep flavor and sublime marbling. Snake River Farms and Double D Ranch have been mastering that prized combination ever since. It is more work that takes precision, genetic mastery, and a dedication to unending refinement and innovation. They control the entire supply chain, from the ranches where cattle are raised to the humane processing facility to the in-house customer care team. It would be easy to outsource, but being a pioneer does not mean taking the easy way. It means doing work the right way.

Aging Beef

All Snake River Farms and Double D Ranch products are aged to maximize the flavor and texture of our beef. They employ two different methods:

Wet-Aging

A technique where subprimal cuts of beef are vacuum-sealed and allowed to rest in refrigeration for a minimum of 21 days. Natural enzymes tenderize the beef and allow deeper flavors to develop. The product is not exposed to the air, so there is no weight loss. Our products are all wet-aged 21 days or more before they are packaged and shipped.

Dry-Aging

A unique process where beef subprimal is placed in a carefully controlled environment in order to intensify its natural flavor and make it more tender. All products are dry-aged for a minimum of 45 days, the time required to enhance flavor.

How are the animals fed?

Snake River Farms American Wagyu Beef cattle are grass and hay fed on pasture for the first year of their life. They are then fed a sustainable diet of hay, forages, potatoes, vitamins, and minerals. SRF cattle will never receive any growth agents or growth-promoting hormones.

Some of them are a little odd-shaped, but they cook up great. I pan-fried them in butter to seal them and baked them for 5 minutes at 400 degrees. Perfect Medium rare and tender. Highly recommended. I ordered some ribeyes just based on the taste of the first order. Best steak I've ever had, well worth the price…and I qualify that by saying that the price restricts this to a rare-special-occasion-only purchase. I've paid good money at excellent steakhouses (including wagyu steaks), and this is by far the best. Thanks for a great meal!

Discover the unforgettable taste of American Wagyu beef

The unforgettable taste of American Wagyu beef

There's a reason why award-winning chefs and top-rated restaurants throughout the world covet American Wagyu beef. One bite reveals what makes it special: a buttery texture that seems to melt on your tongue, complex flavors that linger long after you've finished, and a richness that redefines what beef can be.

We earn commissions if you shop through the links on this page at no additional cost.

At Snake River Farms, the pioneers of American Wagyu beef, they've spent over 57 years perfecting the art of raising cattle that produce this extraordinary eating experience. Whether you're a home cook looking to elevate your next special occasion or simply curious about what makes this beef worth the premium price, understanding American Wagyu starts with understanding what sets it apart from everything else at the butcher counter.

What is American Wagyu beef?

American Wagyu is a crossbreed of traditional Japanese Wagyu cattle and high-quality American breeds, typically Angus. This combination creates beef that offers the best of both worlds: the exceptional marbling and tenderness of Wagyu genetics combined with the hearty, beefy flavor that American palates prefer.

The genetics work like this:

  • F1 (50/50): 50% Japanese Wagyu, 50% American Angus (most common)
  • F2 (75%): Result of breeding F1 back to fullblood Wagyu
  • Fullblood (100%): Pure Japanese Wagyu genetics

The story of American Wagyu began in the 1970s when the first Wagyu cattle arrived in the United States. But it wasn't until the 1980s that Snake River Farms founder Robert Rebholtz Sr. made the groundbreaking decision to raise Japanese Wagyu cattle commercially in the United States. His goal was ambitious but simple: produce the finest beef possible.
We earn commissions if you shop through the links on this page at no additional cost.
The risk paid off, though it took time. In the 1990s, SRF executives personally introduced American Wagyu to the country's top chefs. The turning point came in 2003, when the Old Homestead Steakhouse in New York City added a $41 burger made with Snake River Farms American Wagyu to its menu. The press coverage was massive, and Snake River Farms went from a culinary oddity to a sought-after delicacy.

Today, American Wagyu differs from Japanese Wagyu in important ways. Japanese A5 Wagyu, with its intense marbling and delicate, almost sweet flavor, can feel like “a ball of fat” to American palates accustomed to larger, meatier steaks. American Wagyu maintains luxurious tenderness while offering a more pronounced beefy flavor with that distinctive Wagyu richness. It also works better with traditional American cooking methods like grilling, whereas Japanese Wagyu is often sliced thin and cooked quickly over high heat.

Understanding beef marbling and the BMS scale

Marbling, the intramuscular fat that runs through beef, is what separates good steak from unforgettable steak. This delicate web of fat enhances both flavor and texture, making every bite more tender and more flavorful than the last.

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) grades beef on a scale of Select, Choice, and Prime. Here's how those grades break down:

USDA Grade Description Marbling Level
Select Fairly tender, but less marbling means less juiciness Minimal
Choice Very juicy and tender Moderate
Prime Abundant marbling, typically sold to restaurants Slightly abundant

But here's what most consumers don't realize: USDA Prime represents the TOP of the USDA scale. It maxes out at a Beef Marbling Score (BMS) of 4 to 5. This is where American Wagyu begins.

The Beef Marbling Score is a 12-point scale developed by the Japanese Meat Grading Association. It allows for international comparison of beef quality and measures marbling that exceeds the USDA scale entirely.
We earn commissions if you shop through the links on this page at no additional cost.
Snake River Farms uses this extended scale to grade their beef:

SRF Grade BMS Range Description
SRF Silver® 4-5 Marbling comparable to USDA Prime
SRF Black® 6-8 Significantly more marbling than USDA Prime
SRF Gold® 9-10 Dramatically more marbling than USDA Prime
SRF Gold Plus™ 11-12 The highest marbling available

See how Snake River Farms grades surpass USDA Prime standards, providing the dense marbling necessary for a buttery texture.

The difference is visual and substantial. A USDA Prime ribeye shows good fat content. An SRF Black® ribeye shows significantly more marbling, evenly distributed throughout the meat. An SRF Gold® ribeye features the kind of intricate fat patterning that excites chefs.

Fat matters because fat carries flavor. The more marbling in the beef, the richer and more complex the taste. Wagyu's marbling is evenly distributed, ensuring each bite delivers consistent tenderness and a burst of buttery richness. This fat also melts at a lower temperature than other beef fats, which is why Wagyu literally melts in your mouth as you eat it.

The American Wagyu taste experience

So what does American Wagyu actually taste like? The experience differs from Japanese Wagyu in ways that matter to home cooks.

Japanese A5 Wagyu melts on your tongue like butter. The fat tastes sweet, almost like meat candy, with overwhelming richness that makes it difficult to eat more than a few ounces at a time. It's extraordinary, but it's not designed for the American steak dinner tradition.

American Wagyu offers something different. The flavor profile is rich and buttery, yes, but with nutty undertones and layers of complexity not found in conventional beef. The texture provides that signature melt-in-your-mouth tenderness, yet it still offers a satisfying chew that feels like eating steak rather than fat.

The secret lies in the fat composition. Wagyu beef contains higher levels of monounsaturated fats, often called the “good” fats. These fats have a lower melting point than the saturated fats typically found in other types of beef. As the meat cooks, this fat literally melts into the muscle fibers, infusing each bite with rich, savory flavor throughout the entire cut, not just on the surface.

A writer for Outside Online conducted a blind taste test comparing USDA Prime, American Wagyu from Booth Creek Wagyu, and Japanese A5 Snow Beef. The American Wagyu delivered a totally unique taste compared to both. Versus the sweetness of the Japanese A5, the American Wagyu tasted nutty, with layers of complexity. It wasn't overwhelming either, the writer noted. Unlike the Japanese A5, which could only be eaten in small portions, the American Wagyu was something they could happily finish as a full steak dinner.

This makes American Wagyu ideal for home cooks who want a special-occasion steak that feels luxurious without being so rich that you can only manage a few bites.

How to cook American Wagyu beef at home

Cooking American Wagyu requires a slightly different approach than standard grocery store beef. The high fat content means it cooks faster, and flare-ups are more common. But with a few simple adjustments, you can achieve restaurant-quality results at home.

Preparation basics

Start by taking your Wagyu out of the refrigerator at least 30 minutes before cooking. Cold beef doesn't cook evenly, and this simple step helps maintain consistent cooking throughout the steak.

For seasoning, less is more. The rich flavor of American Wagyu shines without heavy seasoning. A simple sprinkle of kosher salt and freshly cracked black pepper is enough. If you prefer, add a touch of garlic powder or fresh herbs, but resist the urge to use heavy marinades or sauces that mask the beef's natural flavor.

Cooking methods by cut

For steaks (ribeye, New York strip, filet mignon):

The reverse sear method works exceptionally well for Wagyu. Here's how to do it:

Mastering the reverse sear technique allows you to achieve a restaurant-quality crust while preserving the steak's luxurious, melt-in-your-mouth interior.

  1. Preheat your oven or grill to 250°F
  2. Season the steak and place it on a rack
  3. Cook until the internal temperature reaches 110°F (about 20-30 minutes)
  4. Remove and let rest while you heat a cast-iron skillet over high heat
  5. Add a high smoke point oil (avocado, grapeseed, or canola)
  6. Sear 1-2 minutes per side until a crust forms
  7. Rest 5-10 minutes before slicing

The reverse sear produces an evenly cooked interior with a flavorful, savory crust. A final sear in cast iron creates the Maillard reaction that gives steak its distinctive browned flavor.

Temperature guidelines:

  • Rare: 120°F
  • Medium-rare: 130°F (recommended for Wagyu)
  • Medium: 135°F
  • Medium-well: 145°F

Wagyu's marbling means it cooks faster than other beef. Overcooking leads to loss of tenderness and flavor. Aim for medium-rare to medium to fully enjoy the beef's characteristics.

For ground beef:

Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until fully browned. Avoid overcooking, as Wagyu's high-fat content can melt away if left on the heat for too long.

For roasts (brisket, prime rib):

Use a low oven temperature (250°F-275°F) and cook until the internal temperature reaches your desired doneness. Slow cooking in a Dutch oven or smoker works wonderfully for larger cuts.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Don't cook straight from the fridge
  • Don't overseason with heavy marinades
  • Don't cook beyond medium (the fat begins to render out)
  • Don't skip the resting period (this redistributes juices)
  • Don't use olive oil for searing (it has a low smoke point)

Serving suggestions

Complement Wagyu's richness with simple sides that don't compete for attention:

  • Roasted vegetables with olive oil and sea salt
  • Creamy mashed potatoes
  • Fresh arugula salad with lemon vinaigrette
  • Grilled asparagus
  • Simple pan sauce made from the drippings

Avoid overpowering sauces. A drizzle of balsamic reduction or a pat of herb butter is plenty.

Where to buy premium American Wagyu beef

Not all Wagyu-labeled beef is created equal. Without strict labeling laws in the United States, finding authentic American Wagyu requires knowing what to look for in a supplier.

The key is transparency. Quality producers will tell you:

  • The breed percentage (F1, F2, or Fullblood)
  • The Beef Marbling Score or grade
  • Their raising and feeding practices
  • Specifics about the ranch or farm

Snake River Farms (our top recommendation)

  • 12-point BMS grading: Their entry-level Silver grade matches USDA Prime; Black and Gold grades far exceed it
  • Master butchers: Every steak is hand-cut, not machine-processed
  • 1,000+ ranching partners: Working with multi-generational Northwest ranching families
  • Exported to 50+ countries: Their quality is recognized globally

Other notable producers

While Snake River Farms leads the American Wagyu market, other quality producers include:

  • KC Cattle Company (Missouri): Veteran-raised Wagyu with transparent sourcing
  • Five Oaks Farm Wagyu (Iowa): Family operation offering both Fullblood and American Wagyu
  • Booth Creek Wagyu (Kansas): Provides breed percentage and digital marbling analysis with each cut

Health benefits and considerations

Wagyu beef isn't just about indulgence. It also offers nutritional benefits that distinguish it from conventional beef.

Higher beneficial fats:

American Wagyu contains higher levels of monounsaturated fats compared to commercial beef. These heart-healthy fats found in olive oil and avocados may help reduce levels of bad cholesterol.

Omega fatty acids:

Wagyu beef is high in Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids. Omega-3s are known for their heart-health benefits, while Omega-6s are essential for brain function and normal growth and development.

CLA content:

Wagyu beef contains higher levels of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), a type of fat that has been shown to have various health benefits including reducing inflammation and supporting immune function.

Considerations:

The richness of Wagyu means a little goes a long way. A standard 16-ounce ribeye might be perfect for one hungry diner with conventional beef, but the same cut of Wagyu could satisfy two people easily due to its richness. This actually makes the per-serving cost more reasonable than the per-pound price suggests.

For those watching cholesterol or managing diabetes, Wagyu's fat composition may offer advantages over conventional beef, though moderation remains important given the overall fat content. As with any rich food, enjoyment comes from savoring appropriate portions.

Experience the unforgettable taste with Snake River Farms

American Wagyu beef represents the pinnacle of what beef can be. The combination of exceptional marbling, buttery texture, and complex flavor creates a dining experience that lingers long after the meal ends.

Snake River Farms has spent over five decades perfecting the art of raising American Wagyu. From their 57-year heritage to their innovative 12-point grading system that exceeds USDA Prime standards, they've earned their position as the pioneers of this extraordinary beef.

Whether you choose their SRF Black® grade for an impressive dinner party centerpiece, or start with their ground beef to experience Wagyu flavor in a weeknight burger, you're getting beef that has been raised with care from ranch to table.

The unboxing experience itself speaks to their attention to detail: sustainable insulation, dry ice to keep everything perfectly frozen, and cuts that look as beautiful as they taste. It's the kind of quality that makes home cooks feel like professional chefs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is American Wagyu as good as Japanese Wagyu?

American Wagyu offers a different but equally valuable experience. Japanese A5 Wagyu has more intense marbling and a sweeter, more delicate flavor that can be overwhelming in large portions. American Wagyu offers a meatier bite and robust beefy flavor while maintaining exceptional tenderness. Many American diners prefer it because it works better with traditional steak cooking methods and larger portion sizes.

How much does American Wagyu beef cost?

Premium American Wagyu typically ranges from $50 to $100 per pound for steaks, with ground beef more accessible at $12 to $15 per pound. At Snake River Farms, SRF Black® ribeyes are $69.00, while Gold® grade cuts can reach $150+. The richness means smaller portions satisfy, making the per-serving cost more reasonable than the per-pound price suggests.

Is Wagyu beef good for diabetics?

Wagyu beef's higher proportion of monounsaturated fats and Omega-3 fatty acids may offer advantages over conventional beef for blood sugar management. However, portion control remains important. Consult with your healthcare provider about incorporating Wagyu into your specific dietary plan.

Is Wagyu good for high cholesterol?

Wagyu contains higher levels of monounsaturated fats, which are considered heart-healthy and may help reduce bad cholesterol levels. However, it is still rich in fat overall, so moderation is key. Those with cholesterol concerns should enjoy Wagyu as an occasional treat rather than a dietary staple.

What is the best way to cook American Wagyu steak?

The reverse sear method works best: cook low and slow in the oven or indirect heat until the internal temperature reaches 110°F, then finish with a high-heat sear in a cast iron skillet. Aim for medium-rare (130°F internal temperature) to allow the marbling to melt and distribute throughout the meat.

How does the Beef Marbling Score work?

The BMS is a 12-point scale that measures intramuscular fat. USDA Prime maxes out at BMS 4-5. American Wagyu typically ranges from BMS 6-9, with premium cuts reaching BMS 10-12. Snake River Farms uses this scale for their Silver (4-5), Black (6-8), Gold (9-10), and Gold Plus (11-12) grades.

Description

American Wagyu Kobe. Aged and cut by a master butcher.

It would be easy to outsource but being a pioneer does not mean taking the easy way.

Dry-Aging

A unique process where beef subprimal is placed in a carefully controlled environment in order to intensify their natural flavor and make them more tender. All products are dry-aged a minimum of 45 days which is the minimum amount of time to enhance the flavor.

How are the animals fed?

Snake River Farms American Wagyu Beef cattle are grass and hay fed on pasture for the first year of their life. They are then fed a sustainable diet of hay, forages, as well as potatoes, vitamins, and minerals. SRF cattle will never receive any growth agents or growth-promoting hormones.

Marbling Scale at Snake River Farms
____________________________

This steak is American Wagyu Black Grade, rated 6 to 8 on the Japanese Beef Marbling Score (BMS)

Beef sold in the U.S. is graded by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). There are eight total grades and the top grade is USDA Prime.

All Snake River Farms American Wagyu beef grades above Prime. Special breeds of cattle like Japanese Wagyu are capable of producing marbling beyond their American counterparts. To grade this high level of marbling, we adopted the Japanese Beef Marbling Score.

Using BMS, beef marbling is measured on a scale from 1 to 12, with a 1 being Select beef and a 12 being the highest level of marbling possible.

The American Kobe Wagyu Boneless Prime Rib arrived well-packaged and completely frozen. These are wonderful and will be a welcome meal when we get together.  The meat itself was tender and flavorful. A fantastic product that I would definitely order again! Get the pictured meat American Kobe Wagyu Boneless Prime Rib 5lb. (Aff), or see all Snake River Farms American Wagyu Beef offerings Snake River Farms American Wagyu Beef. Really nice steaks. Tasty and tender. Some of them are a little odd-shaped but cook up great. I've paid good money at excellent steak houses and this is by far the best. Family hit and a great meal!

My Review of ALMOND – MANDORLA – FAIRTRADE CERTIFIED

This is the first time I have purchased off-brand coffee pods for my Nespresso machine. I wanted to save some money so I went for it thinking the coffee might not be great but at least my wallet would thank me. The pods arrived very quickly. I purchased the flavor pack which comes with Vanilla, Chocolate, Coconut, Hazelnut, and Caramel pods. Well my friends, to my surprise I think I like these even more than the Nespresso pods!! First of all, you get a quick delivery, so order yours today! Get the pictured item ALMOND – MANDORLA – FAIRTRADE CERTIFIED (Aff), or see all pods from Gourmesso. Really nice, deep rich flavor. Tried the variety selection from Gourmesso and this was by far the favorite, in fact, one of my friends always asks for this coffee. So being able to buy a whole load of them is fantastic. I'd definitely buy it again. The packaging of the pods also is not as pretty as Nespresso pods. (All the pods are black regardless of flavor. The top of the pod says the flavor.) If you love sweeter/flavored coffees that are a lighter-medium roast, you'll love these! If you are a passionate, coffee-aficionado who likes their coffee black and rich this may not be for you. These pods may be my favorite and I have purchased from them several times in the past, but during this horrendous Covid-19 Virus Crisis I could not get out to purchase at any store. Fortunately, purchasing online is quick and easy and I ordered directly. Surprisingly, I was impressed with the customer service keeping me coming back for future purchases. Highly recommended.

Pros
  • Cost per capsule often less than $0.50 (33% less than Nespresso brand)
  • Good variety of Nespresso espresso capsules
  • Also offer tea capsules
Cons
  • Only available for OriginalLine machines
  • Not as fresh as Nespresso capsules or other industry-leading 3rd-party alternatives
  • Capsules made of plastic and can be tough for machines to puncture
Final Thoughts
Gourmesso isn't the best alternative to Nespresso or Keurig brand pods, but they are more affordable. That's Gourmesso's niche and they are excellent at delivering that mission. If you're looking to save on your daily habit, check out Gourmesso.
